Abstract:

Academic research has the power to create meaningful societal change, yet researchers often navigate complex challenges when engaging in impactful work (e.g., institutional support, community access, measuring impact, disseminating work). Dr Marian Makkar will share insights from her current research on housing security, blood donation engagement, and volunteering, highlighting the transformative potential of research in addressing real-world issues. The discussion will also explore the ethical, institutional, and personal risks associated with conducting research that challenges existing systems and influences policy and practice. This session offers an opportunity to reflect on the balance between the risks and rewards of research that drives societal impact.
