Abstract

This research addresses the way control dynamics affect the role of international R&D subsidiaries to innovate for the global – rather than the local – market. We shed light on the conditions under which external embeddedness and internal control influence the subsidiaries' current role as global innovator as well as the way their role evolves from local to global innovator. We compare the static and dynamic effect of control on subsidiaries' innovation role. Regarding the static aspect, we confirm that, while external research embeddedness is conducive to a global innovator role, corporate human control deters their role as global innovator. Regarding the dynamic aspect, we identify that corporate information control alleviates the otherwise negative association between the subsidiary’s initial role as the local innovator and the subsequent role as the global innovator. Our findings imply that a dynamic view of control reveals how a certain control mechanism contributes to the subsidiary evolution from a local innovator to a global innovator.
