Entry to the MPhil program is open to applicants who are able to demonstrate superior achievement in their prior studies. The minimum qualification requirement for admission to a program for a Master of Philosophy is:

  • a degree of bachelor, with an overall grade of distinction or higher, from an Australian university; or
  • another qualification that the Delegated Authority is satisfied is equivalent or superior to a degree mentioned in paragraph (a); or
  • a combination of qualifications and professional experience that the Delegated Authority is satisfied is equivalent or superior to a degree mentioned in paragraph (a).

The MPhil program includes some preparatory coursework (please refer to Coursework in PhD program of RSM), however the essential element of the degree is a thesis of up to 60,000 words on an approved topic. Upon completing successfully the compulsory courses and electives, and with the approval of the MPhil supervisory panel and HDR convenor, students proceed to the research component of their program, which normally takes 12 months of full-time research. During this time, each candidate writes a thesis, which is submitted for examination by two to three external examiners, who are experts in the relevant field and will assess the candidate for completion. In addition, each candidate is expected to present their research yearly (when studying on a full-time basis) at opportunities provided by RSM (e.g. seminars, conferences, doctoral colloquium). In their final year, candidates are also required to give a final presentation (Oral Presentation) that is usually held three months before thesis submission.
